60 Seconds with Jake Nicholson-Lailey

Meet Jake Nicholson-Lailey, director and floral designer at Abundiflora in Glastonbury. Jake’s an ambassador for the Use Them or Lose Them campaign from Country Baskets, he’s spared us sixty seconds to chat about remodelling his shop, starting out in the industry and more. Find out how you can join Jake in the Use Them or Lose Them campaign.

What three words would best describe you?

Determined, diplomatic and dedicated.

Best business decision?

Remodelling the original shop three years ago. Times and tastes have changed and now we really stand out.

Worst business decision?

Paying to be included in various telephone directories over the years.

What turns your stomach and why?

Natural formations, like hexagonal patterns. I know, not ideal in a florist!

How do you relax?

Playing the piano and singing, knitting, sewing, cross stitch, baking and spending time with friends and family.

Greatest indulgence?

Music. Buying it, playing it and dissecting it.

What’s your biggest pet hate?

Bad customer service. There’s no excuse for poor service.

What’s something you dream of doing?

Seeing some of my music idols in concert, we may need a time machine for a few of them though!

What do you find most difficult?

Saying no. To anyone. Especially customers.

Is the customer always right?

Absolutely.

Most cringe-making moment of your career?

Finding out a loyal customer was recovering from a broken leg, and replying: “Oh drunk again?!” To find they had been hit by a car. Yikes. We laughed about it, thankfully.

Best piece of advice to someone starting out in the industry?

Learn before you leap. There is a great deal of knowledge required to work in this industry, and don’t undersell yourself.

You’re stranded on a desert island, only one flower grows there, which would you choose?

Goodness, so many to choose from. But, an all year round favourite has to be Oriental Lilies.

And finally, the plug…
